~ Meet the Scorpio ~ Helen Segil
What are your sun/moon/rising astrological placements?
Scorpio sun, Aries moon, Gemini rising
How do you feel your signs have an influence over your work?
I love this question because its not something I've never thought about before, but within my ceramic practice I tend to release new collections and work in a variety of different mediums (slip casting, throwing, hand-building etc.) I’m always trying out new designs and styles which I’m sure could be attributed to my moon and rising placement. There is definitely deep intention behind my work, or the way I choose to run a business and I think thats probably coming from my scorpio sun.
Tell us about a favorite scent memory.
Walking into a house with sautéing onions feels like a hug for me. There’s something so warm and inviting about it, like you know you're about to receive nourishment...Also lingering campfire smoke reminds me of so many sweet childhood memories.
What color are you really vibing with lately?
I always love a shade of mauve and things in the red/pink/orange/yellow family. Also very into the right shade of chartreuse. Color in general is just the best!
What’s something interesting that you’ve read, watched, or listened to recently?
My favorite book of the year was Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, by Gabrielle Zevin but I’m currently reading Just Kids by Patti Smith and really enjoying it. In terms of TV, I’m loving Our Flag Means Death.
Do you have any magical rituals or special ways you like to unwind in your space?
It’s more of a wind up than a wind down, but I love the wait times involved in my coffee rituals. Waiting to press a french press, or for your pour over to drain or your moka pot to boil. The coffee ritual is big for me, I love a slow Sunday morning where you can stay in bed drinking a coffee and reading a book with a cozy candle lit.
What’s something exciting you’re looking forward to this year?
I’m really looking forward to working on some sculptural pieces in the studio now that the holidays have winded down. Mugs and cups are great but I love making with no intention and seeing what I end up with. There’s something about leaning into childlike intuition and imagination and producing unfettered work just for yourself.
